In a near-future London where humans and humanoid bots live side by side, a sophisticated virus is infiltrating the national system. If it uploads fully, every intelligent machine in the country - from home assistants to hospital bots to android enforcers - will shut down.

Zero, a thirteen-year-old hacker whose day job is to sneak into high-security server rooms and 'liberate' funds from undeserving corporations, has a serious distrust of bots, and no real interest in saving the world. But the virus threatens the life of his younger sister Grace, who has an artificial heart.

No one will work harder than Zero to stop the upload. Except perhaps a mysterious humanoid bot who appears with secrets of his own. Zero doesn't trust him. He doesn't even like him.

But with only hours on the clock, the only way to protect Grace might be to partner up. And along the way, he must come up against MI6, and unravel his own past...

ZERO OVERRIDE in your school

SCHOOL VISITS

I love visiting schools and I’m available for in-person and virtual assemblies or workshops for years 5 to 9. My sessions are fast-paced and fun – just like Zero Override but hopefully with less threat to national security.

ASSEMBLIES

In assemblies I’ll talk about how and why I became a children's author, we’ll look at different kinds of AI and robots, and I’ll read an extract from the book. During in-person events, we’ll even turn one of your teachers into a robot before finishing with a Q&A.

WORKSHOPS

During creative writing workshops (KS 2, 3 and 4) we cover elements such as:

  • developing ideas for action- filled stories

  • plotting and planning

  • polishing and editing

Choose between a one or two hour, or half-day session.

TEACHING RESOURCES

We have created some in-class resources around the themes within Zero Override. For more information, click the logo below.

IN THE PRESS

WHO, ME?

I grew up on a stony stretch of the south coast, nourished by a balanced diet of fantasy, sci-fi, horror and adventure. Raised amid the happy – if noisy – chaos of siblings, foster-siblings and cousins, it’s little wonder I frequently escaped to the worlds of books, occasionally feigning illness to stay home from school to read Ursula K. Le Guin, Tolkien, Terry Brooks or John Wyndham (sorry, Mum). Despite reading voraciously and asking endless questions, it took me an embarrassingly long time to realise I could be an author too – and longer still to make it happen.

Along the way, I’ve been a product designer, a communications director, a speechwriter, magazine editor and webcaster (though rarely all at once). For the last 25 years I worked in digital tech, and ran digital agencies. Nowadays, as well as writing books, I’m also a copywriter and editor, with a specialism in tech and digital engineering. Those themes frequently feature in my fiction, although my speculative contemporary adventures tend to have much higher stakes and far fewer meetings.

I live in South London with my wife and (when they’re not at uni) our two daughters. Despite the subjects I write about, I am not a robot, nor am I a spy. But that’s what a spy would say, isn’t it?
